Meteora Full Day Trip From Athens

In this excursion you will visit the Monasteries of Meteora located in northern Greece, in the plain of Thessaly, near the city of Kalampaka. They are classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and consist of structures located at the top of the rocks, carved by erosion and are called Meteora. They are located at a height of 600 meters in some of which are Byzantine monasteries that began to be built in the 14th century, at the end of the Byzantine Empire and were completed in the 16th century. These monasteries are Christian Orthodox and represent an important site of Greek Orthodox monasticism. The rock formations where they were built would be, according to ancient Christian writings, "the rocks sent from heaven to earth" to allow the Greeks to retreat and pray. Hundreds of thousands of years ago, a large river flowing in the Sea of Thessaly was in the place of these imposing rocks, when this river found a new outlet in the Aegean Sea, it under the action of erosion and earthquakes, sank and gave birth to this original landscape. The first monks to live in these places were hermits who lived in caves and wanted to be closer to God, later built to escape the Turks, during the Ottoman Empire. There are currently seventeen ruined monasteries and only five can be visited. A modest dress is required for both men and women.
